But to tell you the truth, figuring out what to do first as a new resident of a city can be a little overwhelming. Sure, you can turn to Google to get some suggestions, but why not take it from the locals who know the city inside and out? Without further ado, let’s take a look at a few of our suggestions for what to do first.
Things You Need to Do In Fort Collins
Did you know that it’s literally physically impossible to go to Fort Collins without stopping to take a selfie at Horsetooth Reservoir? Okay, okay. That’s an exaggeration, but it is one of the highlights of the city and it’s an incredibly popular destination for newcomers and lifelong Fort Collins-ites as well. It’s open to the public, making it an amazing place to venture to no matter what time of year it is. Located just west of the city, it sits at 5,420 feet and it’s a blast no matter what you have in mind.
Looking for a fun hike? Horsetooth Mountain Open Space offers almost 30 miles worth of hikes to enjoy and the scenery is pretty hard to beat. Horsetooth Rock is a pretty easy hike for many, and being the dog-friendly city that it is, you can even take your four-legged friends along with you (as long as they’re leashed).
CooperSmith’s Pub & Brewing
Billing themselves as “an Old Town tradition,” CooperSmith’s is just that. It’s the perfect place to sit down for a good bite to eat and a refreshing cool drink. Being located in Old Town, it’s right in the middle of plenty of Fort Collins action, making it an ideal place for first-time visitors who are looking to get a good overview of one of the city’s most popular destinations.
Prefer to plan ahead? The beer finder on their website allows you to peruse their oat sodas by ABV, year brewed, IBU, and more. In other words, if you enjoy a cold one every now and then, it’s sure to put a smile on your face.
Grab a Bike
If you weren’t already in the know about this, a look in any direction is sure to make it clear — Fort Collins is a very bike-friendly city. Getting from one part of town to another is a breeze on a bike, and you’ll be in good company as well. Whether you’re riding around the city to get to know your surroundings or you’re on your way from one place to another, you’ll find that being on a bike is one of the best ways to travel in the city.
A staple of the community for 8 years now, Pinball Jones is unlike anything you’ve ever experienced in the past. They sum it all up perfectly: “In addition to the vast collection of pinball machines, we also offer a variety of arcade games, air hockey, bowlers and more, all in a family-friendly environment.” We couldn’t agree more.
Whether you have a favorite pinball game that you can’t get enough of or you’re mostly in it to meet some friendly people, Pinball Jones is sure to be one of the highlights that you look back on fondly during your time of getting to know the city. They even have two locations — one downtown and one near Campus West — ensuring that a good game or two (or fifteen) of pinball is never far away.
Scrumpy’s Hard Cider Bar
Home of Summit Hard Cider, Scrumpy’s is a little bit different than what you might be expecting. In a city that’s known for its breweries, a cidery is a little bit out of the ordinary. If you enjoy cider, you’re sure to find that it’s a welcome addition.
Scrumpy’s has more than just cider from Summit as well, and their website notes that they have 48 rotating taps, “including everything from beer and cider to wine and mead.”
