3 Great Food Staples of Fort Collins

Cafe Mexicali

Right off of College and Swallow in Fort Collins, Cafe Mexicali–affectionately referred to as Cafe Mex by many of the locals–is sure to put a smile on your face. Everybody loves a good burrito and Cafe Mex just might make the best smothered burrito in the entire city. Their sweet pork is the thing of legend and as their website puts it, the food you’ll get there is “as fresh as it gets.” Everything about this place is incredible.

Whether you want to grab a bite and take it back to your home or dine in, one thing is for sure–when you’re done eating, you’ll be smiling and satisfied. A great selection of enchiladas, quesolle, salads, soups, burritos, tacos, and nachos ensures that you have plenty of great choices and the good news is that each option is better than the last.

Our suggestion: Sweet Pork Smothered Burrito with creamy habanero sauce

Doug’s Day Diner

Everybody loves a good breakfast and a trip to Doug’s Day Diner off of Harmony and Council Tree is sure to provide you with some of the best breakfast food around. Whether you’re in the mood for huevos rancheros, omelettes, or breakfast burritos, you’ll most definitely find something that sounds great on their menu. They have a great lunch and dinner menu that’s packed with burgers, sandwiches, and other grub as well, but they serve their breakfasts all day.

Their website notes that just about everything they “create is homemade and scratch-made” whether it’s “sauces, soups, browns, fries, potato chips, biscuits, syrup, and jams to the meats, sausages, pickles, and dressing.” In short, if you’re looking for a place that does everything in-house, Doug’s is hard to beat. Whether you customize your own breakfast burrito to include country gravy with carne asada or stick to a local favorite like the Hillbilly (which contains three eggs, browns, and a biscuit topped with gravy as well as your choice of bacon, ham, sausage, or turkey green chili sausage), you’re sure to enjoy your trip to Doug’s Day Diner.

Our suggestion: Cowboy Papas (hash browns, cheese, chile or gravy, your choice of eggs, bacon, ham, and sausage)

Choice City Butcher and Deli

Every city that’s worth its salt has a go-to butcher. Fort Collins is no exception thanks to Choice City. At Ram’s Crossing East, we have a courtyard with a barbecue area, so if you’re looking to grill up some meats, Choice City should be your first stop. They’ll set you up with whatever you need to make your cookout a win.

The good news is that if you find yourself in Old Town and you’re looking to grab a bite to eat for lunch, Choice City also serves some of the best lunch around. They have a number of great sandwiches to choose from including reubens, Philly cheese steaks, hot dogs, BLTs, and clubs as well as some of the absolute best burgers in town. Tucked away on the northwest corner of College and Olive, you can settle in for a quick bite, but be sure to get there early on the weekends because Choice City is a popular destination!

Our suggestion: Breakfast Burger (topped with a fried egg, gravy, hash browns, and Canadian bacon)
